Now that you are ready to
go to the clubs and begin your life as a Salsero or Salsera, you must
learn the code of conduct developed over decades of dancing. It is a
huge mistake to think that Latin clubs and/or nights follow the same
loose rules of clubs that play predominantly house and club music.
Below we will give you a crash course on Latin Club Etiquette:
Men’s Etiquette
Have Good Hygiene – If you are not sweating, you are not dancing…wear
deodorant and cologne. For some suggestions of good cologne, see “The
Editor ’s Corner” opinion column on the Best Smelling Cologne.
Never Let Them See You Sweat! – When it comes to the salsa scene there
are two types of clothes: Clothes that show sweat and clothes that
hide it. Beware of the “water-balloon on the back look”. If you are
questioning whether a shirt is wearable, use the official “SalsaWild
Sweat Test”.
The test is as follows:
· Put on the shirt
· Pour yourself a glass of water
· Pour the glass of water over your head
· Does the shirt look wet? (Thus the “water-balloon on the back look”)
Approach as a Gentleman – Never grab a woman and tug her onto the
dance floor, politely ask her to dance and if she refuses thank her
and walk away! Assume she is injured, this will make it much easier on
you.
Dance with Respect – When dancing with a woman, maintain a respectful
distance. Your goal is to make the woman feel comfortable so that you
both can enjoy the dance. Refusal to respect this rule will be the
fastest route to a very lonely night.
Women’s Etiquette
Smile! There is something about a smile on a woman's face that makes
her much more approachable and pleasant.
Make Yourself Available To Be Asked To Dance! Don't hide from the
salseros - put yourself out there to experience different dance
partners. The experience will only improve your skills.
Loosen Up! Sometimes it's easy to get stiff from being nervous or just
plain inexperience, however, try to relax and enjoy yourself in order
to make it easier to be led on the dance floor.
Don't Stare At The Floor! When salsa dancing, try not to concentrate
on the feet or the floor. Keep your head up and eyes straight ahead -
which leads us to the next tip...
Don't Stare At Your Partner In The Face! When dancing, too much eye
contact (staring) can be uncomfortable. It's ok to look at your
partner every now and then, but give them a little breathing room as
well.
Stand Straight! This will improve your salsa style 100%. When your
posture is good, it enhances your dancing.
Wear Comfortable Clothing! Wear something that does not need a lot of
adjusting. There is nothing more annoying for you the lady, as well as
the man, than constantly tugging and fixing your clothes when they are
trying to attempt a move on you.
Smell Good! Good hygiene is of the utmost importance in the salsa
world. Simple things such as wearing a light perfume and not
forgetting deodorant will help.
Have Fresh Breath! Salsa is an up close and personal dance. The
fresher the breath, the better the experience.
Stay Dry! It's quite true that salsa is exercise and causes you to
sweat, however, try to stay dry. Dancing salsa requires a lot of
contact. If you tend to sweat a lot, bring your own handkerchief or
hand towel and wipe off that sweat.
Have Fun! Get out there on the dance floor and enjoy yourself. Your
attitude will be reflected in your dancing!
